Packaging Redesign

New Photocurator Packaging Design

A year in the planning the new photocurator clamshell packs are really starting to take shape.

The reason to go with a new packaging design was purely due to their ease of assembly. Working with the original design (I spent many days, evenings and nights putting together packs) I found that the major flaw in my design was ease of construction e.g. there was lots of folding and intricate inserting.

When I approached companies to assemble the packs for me their quotes for assembly were rather high ($4 a pack minimum)… so out of necessity the clamshell design emerged. I hope you like them, I will post a few more images on Flickr in the next few days showing some of the other design elements (such as the new back design and inner mounting card design).

During the weekend (while fighting off a bad cold) I was able to come up with a new look that was consistent and clean. It is still a work in progress but it’s starting to come together. I now need to build up some images to replace the ‘holder’ images on the back and finalise the copy.

Packaging graphic design

Over the weekend I had a look through some ideas for how I can design an eye catching yet appropriate look for the packaging graphics.

With a new name ‘photowall’ I also needed to look at typefaces that also conveyed a contemporary look without being too trendy.

I have begun using the sans serif ‘Chalet’ as the typeface, but this may change as the graphics and design evolve.

In the past I have found it very difficult to get a decent photograph of the photowall mount in use – this is probably due to my lack of equipment/studio and skill. So as a work around I went back to my 3D computer graphics and began working on an image that conveys the function and the form of the ‘photowall’ photomount. So far the cover graphic is below (it is a work in progress remember):

So much to do

I am currently in discussion with a supplier with regards to producing a new clamshell packaging design for the Photowall photo mount.

I was quite happy with my earlier design, but when making up more than 10 boxes at a time it all became too hard, too quickly.

Other issues I needed to solve were

  • More visual clues on the packaging as to what the Photowall mount was
  • How it works
  • What’s inside
  • The ability to re-use the package for storing your developed photos.

So far I have rendered up an idea for a clamshell design which remains true to the original design but solves the problems I was having with the original – now all I need to do is to write the copy for the cardboard insert and design up the Photowall logo, and layout..
